Christian Education

The Christian Education committee at the Lutheran Church of the Holy Communion runs a number of educational programs, is developing others, while also working to develop plans for the future.

The Adult Forum meets at 10am on Sundays and continues to provide space for questions and conversation regarding Christian faith, responsibility, and history.  We are also trying out some after church sessions as well.  Mark your calendars for the upcoming classes!

  • Praying the Day (11/27-12/18) - An examination of the role of prayer in our lives, led by Sharon Chestnut (one of our resident theologians).

Additionally, a number of bible and religous studies take place during the year. The ones currently running are:

  • Great Christian Thinkers (first Wednesday of the month from 7:00-8:30pm) - We had a wonderful time kicking this series off discussing Augustine.  We'll continue throughout the winter, where we will meet to study and discuss the religious writings of some of the greatest spiritual leaders in history.  Still to come:  Hildegaard of Bingen, Jacob Boehme, John Wesley, Maximus the Confessor, Julian of Norwich, John Calvin, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

In other exciting news, the Holy Communion youth group is active.  Our youth attend mission and fellowship retreats throughout the year.  Our middle school members enjoyed the synod Junior High Gathering at Refreshing Mountain Camp.  Daniel Mambu, a member of the youth board, helped to facilitate the event!  Our senior high members attended a pre-trip meeting to help them get ready for their trip to New Orleans this summer.

We also continue to experiment with various ways of serving the families with young children at church. As always, the nursery is available during the 11:00 service. We also offered a few evening vacation bible school sessions this past summer with food, crafts and puppet shows!

We also offer Sunday School lessons during the 11:00 service on the first Sunday of the month, and could use some help with this ministry as we transition towards implementing Godly Play! For more information about the program, check out www.godlyplayfoundation.org.  If anyone is interested in volunteering to help out with this contact one of the pastors. This is a very important ministry for our church as the number of young children who attend our church is growing!  The next lessons are going to be:

  • Ten Best Ways to Live (Ten Commandments (Nov. 13)
  • The Holy Family (Dec. 4)

Also, parents, look for the “worship bags” at the entrance to the church, These bags contain some crayons and activities for young children for use during the service.
